So say the Iranians, armed, they claim, with Russian intelligence. I have no doubt that the US is directly and indirectly working with assorted anti-Assad jihadist groups in Syria. I also admit that such support, similar to what we did in Afghanistan during the Carter and Reagan administrations, can backfire. But I find it hard to believe that the US would support an al Qaeda affiliate in an effort to resurrect another Khalifate in Syria.
A Russian diplomatic and military source warned of al-Nusra Front (also known as Fatah al-Sham Front or the Levant Liberation Board) and Free Syrian Army (FSA) activities to extend their occupied territories in Southern Syria, adding that the US is preparing the militants to establish a terrorist state.
